
The Old Grey Whistle Test was a tv music show running in the 70s and 80s that featured serious rock music, it wasn't decided by what was in the charts. The name comes from an old "tin pan alley" (music industry) phrase; when for example a music reviewer received a newly pressed record, they would play it for the old greys (doormen in grey suits). The songs they could remember and whistle back to the reviewer having heard it just once or twice would pass the old grey whistle test. Nice, huh?
